Upper Back Pain

Common Causes of Upper Back Pain

There is a great number of things that can cause upper back pain. There are only a few things that can treat it without medicating it. At Clayton Chiropractic, our chiropractor can help to determine the cause of and relieve you of whatever is resulting in your upper back pain.

Upper Back Pain Causes

The back is a combination of nerves, muscles, bone, and the spine. Each of these components can be very delicate and trigger pain for slight agitation. The most common reasons for upper back pain include:

  • Overuse, strain, or injury.
  • Poor posture.
  • Pressure on spinal nerves.
  • Fracture of a vertebrae.
  • Myofascial tissues.

Symptoms of the pain will often reflect the cause of the pain. Adjusting your posture in a manner that alleviates the pain means that posture is likely the issue. A pain that feels like a pinch beneath the skin is most likely a pinched nerve rather than a muscle inflammation.

What Can Be Done About Upper Back Pain?

Treating upper back pain can be very difficult because different causes of the pain will require different treatments. A pinched nerve will require an adjustment to relieve, but an adjustment will not necessarily do anything to help with a pulled muscle. Similarly, a topical cream may work well for an overused muscle, but it will not likely address the pain of a pinched nerve.

How a Chiropractor Can Help

A chiropractor can help to translate what the pain is saying into what to treat. A chiropractor will be able to determine if the pinching pain is the result of a nerve, and if so, perform adjustments to the spine that will relieve the nerve. Rock taping (kinesiology) can reinforce injured or sore muscles, reducing inflammation, and accelerate the healing process.
