Lower Back Pain

Lower Back Pain

Lower back pain can be debilitating and can make day-to-day activities difficult. There are several causes of lower back pain, and a chiropractor can treat many of them at Clayton Chiropractic. The treatment method required would depend on the cause of the pain.

Slipped or Herniated Disc

It is possible to slip a disc in any part of your spine; however, if your pain is in your lower back, the injured disc is at the bottom of your spine. The symptoms of this condition include:

  • Lower back pain
  • Numbness
  • Pain that goes to the arms and legs
  • Pain that worsens after sitting or standing for prolonged periods
  • Pain that worsens when walking short distances
  • Muscle weakness

Sciatica

Your sciatic nerve runs from your lower back, down your buttocks, in through the back of your leg. When the nerve becomes compressed, it can cause pain all the way down the nerve. This is known as sciatica. The pain from sciatica often occurs when you first wake up in the morning. It can also be made worse when you cough or sneeze.

Sprains and Strains

Sprains and strains of the lower back occur when you twist suddenly, during a slip and fall accident, or if you improperly lift something heavy. Sprains and strains can cause lower back pain, loss of range of motion, and inflammation.

Scoliosis

Scoliosis is characterized by a curvature of the spine. Adults with this condition may have had it as a child, but it was never detected. This condition can also occur in adults due to age-related changes to the spine. It is not uncommon for scoliosis to cause lower back pain.

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis occurs when the spinal column begins to narrow and compresses the spinal cord. It typically occurs gradually, showing no early symptoms. As the condition progresses, lower back pain is common.
